The
All-Faiths
Chapel and Student Memorial Garden Project is an ongoing,
student-driven project to build an all-faiths chapel and student
memorial garden on Clemson University’s campus. The chapel will serve
as a small gathering place where students can go in difficult times to
reflect, meditate, and pray. In conjunction with the chapel, The
Student Memorial Garden will provide another source of reflection, but
with the particular purpose of remembering students whom we’ve lost
prior to graduation. Integral to the garden will be a memorial wall
with a list of names of all those passed Tigers. The students leading
this project are the members of the All Faiths Chapel and Student
Memorial Garden Committee chaired by Tyler Smith. To learn more about the Project and the Committee, visit the Project homepage.
The Clemson Student Memorial 5k was started after the Greek Community experienced a tough semester in the Fall of 2007 with the loss of three students who were members of a fraternity or sorority. The Greek community took ownership in the project to bring an All Faiths Chapel and Student Memorial Garden to our campus. The first Clemson Student Memorial 5k took place on November 8th, 2009 marking the first time all three councils of Fraternity and Sorority Life came together for a common cause. Over 300 people came out that day to run in honor of all Clemson students we have lost. We raised over $5000 to donate to the Project and we continue to contribute to the cause every year since then.
Fraternity and Sorority Life believes that it is our responsibility to each other as members of the Clemson Family to ensure that no one should have to experience the loss of a loved one without having a place to go for remembrance, reflection and prayer. Currently, no such place exists on Clemson's campus. We see this race as our honor and obligation not only to our brothers and sisters but to Clemson, to build a place to remember our fellow Tigers who have passed away during their time here; Tigers who walked the same campus, sang the same Alma Mater, enjoyed the same traditions, but did not live to see their graduation day. This race is the fulfillment of that commitment to each other.
Please join us on October 23rd and be part of a project that is close to the hearts of so many in the Fraternity and Sorority community.
